Greg Zarus
Mayor Greg Zarus was born in Philadelphia, and he came to Pine Lake because of his career pursuits in government as a scientist, an engineer, and an environmentalist. Pine Lake elected Greg first in 2002, then in 2003, and again in 2007. Mayor Zarus is an ambitious and industrious leader with an informal common sense manor. His current term ends 2012. Accomplishments that occurred for which he is proud to be a part, include:
- Completing the city’s first Comprehensive Plan and other state items to make the city a Tier 1 Qualified Local Government;
- Starting a Storm water Utility and being awarded “Utility of the Year” by the Georgia WP& CA;
- Facilitating the purchase of land to form the Eastern and Western Wetlands;
- Enabling the cities first annexation, followed by several others;
- Obtaining grants for Sidewalks, Wetlands, Trees, and dams;
- Obtaining redevelopment authority, a Downtown Development Authority, and the city’s first redevelopment bond.
Greg attributes these achievements to the good partnership between council and the administration. Initiatives move forward because of the commitment of council to have thoughtful and open discussion of the many issues; their commitment to making compromises in order to continue to make improvements; and their dedication for taking on many of the responsibilities expected of most mayors. The execution of the city facilities and environment are the result of the hard work of Director Phil Howland, and Chief Sarai Yahuda implements those initiatives that improve safety.
Greg wants to continue to focus on improving our camp-like environment; increasing pedestrian access to the city’s commercial, natural, and congregation areas; facilitating the arts; and increasing the economic activity.
Mayor Greg enjoys our Memorial Day Parade below.
